Uttarakhand Disaster Management Authority has installed a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) warning system near the Dhauliganga basin. The system uses water pressure sensors and satellite uplinks to send real-time flood alerts to low-lying villages. During a recent false alarm test, the entire communication system successfully alerted all villages within 2 minutes. Over 6,000 villagers participated in evacuation drills. More sensors will be installed in the Nanda Devi region, where retreating glaciers are increasingly destabilizing high-altitude lakes.
